Roundtable: what would make us change our minds about x-risk?
Roundtable · Curated · Venue shared on RSVP
We bring together researchers, builders, investors, and policy folks in Gujarat to engage with the hardest questions in AI — where it's going, what could go wrong, and what anyone here can actually do about it.
Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

Small-group discussions on a single question, with pre-reads circulated beforehand. Mostly curated; some open.
Structured, steel-manned arguments. Our first one deliberately brought in people from outside the safety community — it sharpened thinking in both directions.
Working through papers and reports together at a pace that respects busy people.
Sessions with researchers and practitioners working on safety, in India and abroad.
In the works: AI safety bootcamps and, eventually, fellowships — structured ways for people in Gujarat to go from curious to contributing. If you'd like to help make these happen, write to us.

We hold this loosely — if a better path shows up, we'll take it.
India will matter to how AI goes,
through its engineers, companies, and policy — but almost none of the serious safety conversation happens here, and almost none of the field's talent pipeline runs through cities like ours.
We build common knowledge first.
Regular discussions, debates and reading groups give a cross-section of the city's builders, investors and policy people a real grounding in the arguments — not headlines, the actual arguments.
Then we route people toward contribution.
Bootcamps, fellowships, and introductions to the global field — research programs, governance work, safety-relevant engineering — for those who want to go deeper.
Over time, Ahmedabad develops its own bench:
people doing safety research, founders who take the problem seriously, and informed voices in India's AI policy conversation.
We hold this loosely — if a better path shows up, we'll take it.
The papers, courses and books we keep coming back to — from first orientation to technical alignment, governance, and ways to go deeper.
Orientation
If you're new to all of this, start here. No technical background needed.
5 itemsTechnical alignment
The core research problem: how do you make capable AI systems reliably do what their designers and users intend?
5 itemsRisk & strategy
The bigger-picture arguments — for and against treating advanced AI as a potential catastrophe.
4 itemsGovernance & India
Policy levers, international coordination, and the view from here.
4 itemsBooks
For longer-form treatment. Links go to overviews; copies circulate within the group.
3 itemsGoing deeper
If the reading has you wanting to contribute, these are the doors people in our group have actually used or recommend.
4 itemsAfter each session we publish short notes — what was argued, what changed minds, what we're reading next. The same Substack doubles as our newsletter: subscribe to hear about upcoming events and programs.
Venues, co-hosts, and organisations that have supported our sessions.
